The coronial inquest, which began in Melbourne today, is hoped to establish who murdered Mrs James in 1980 and whether the initial police investigation into the killing was adequate.
Maria James' sons, Mark and Adam, have been calling for a second inquest for decades after the first found their mother was murdered by an unknown person. The brothers were only young boys in June 1980 when Mrs James was ambushed in the secondhand bookshop, where they also lived. No one has ever been charged over her murder.
A cold case investigation has identified a total of six suspects, five of which have now died, including Father Anthony Bongiorno.Mark James spoke of his relief that the inquest was happening. "It feels like this is the climax where we have a chance of possibly getting an answer as to who killed our mum," he said. The Coroner heard today that mistakes were made in the initial investigation into Mrs James' death and opportunities were lost because of the mismanagement of evidence.Today a forensic pathologist said that there were also mistakes made in the initial autopsy report.Other witnesses include former police officers and civilian witnesses.
