Amid months of anti-government protests, Iraqi's new prime minister Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi has promised to meet protesters' demands just hours after his appointment.
Iraqi President Barham Saleh appointed Mr Allawi after squabbling lawmakers from rival parties had failed for two months to decide on a successor to Mr Mahdi, who resigned amid protests in December.
