A new report has laid out a bold plan to end homelessness in Australia within a decade, as the nation faces a rental crisis induced by the pandemic, inflation and natural disasters.
Arok Deng says she does not consider herself to be homeless, "just a citizen who deserves a home and to be accepted for housing".The 26-year-old has just given birth, weeks earlier than expected, and is desperate to find a home of her own as she prepares her new life with a newborn.
She says some of the properties she had put in applications for three months ago are still on the market.Australia’s rental crisis has been caused by a ‘perfect storm’ of a pandemic, inflation and natural disasters. “With the floods that we've seen, the fires a few years before that, I think we're seeing more and more people dislocated, and we are seeing people who are working but have not got enough hours, are in insecure work frequently, just not able to compete in the private rental market,” she told SBS News.
“We've seen homelessness increase three to four per cent, every year, year on year, because we haven't had any of the measures in place that are needed to end it.”
