Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt cut the ribbon to the new police station more than a month ago but it has stood vacant ever since.

A brand new $6.1 million police station on a remote Northern Territory island has been standing empty, still padlocked shut, since the day it was officially opened more than a month ago.

But since that day, there has been no permanent police staffing at the Angurugu station — or any sign of life at all — with locals branding the fortified new building a"waste of money". Kayla Parkinson, a 24-year-old health worker in the community, said the"whole thing has been locked up, and I haven't seen any police cars going in or out of there, at all.""As a young single woman living in community … [the new station being built] made me feel a bit safer, but yeah, it's not being used whatsoever."
