The Victorian government is discussing new measures to slow the spread of cases and protect the hospital system from stress.| By MeljCunningham and paulsakkal covid19 SpringSt

Pandemic advisers are calling for nightclubs to be temporarily closed and the urgent implementation of a statewide database system able to upload the rapid test results of thousands of Victorians not being included in the escalating coronavirus infection numbers.

James McCaw, an epidemiologist and mathematical biologist with the University of Melbourne, predicts Victoria will hit the peak of its Omicron outbreak before the end of this month, ahead of a significant wave of hospitalisations predicted in late January or early February. Federal Deputy Chief Medical Officer Sonya Bennett said on Monday official case numbers – which reached 47,738 nationally on Tuesday – were no longer painting the full picture of coronavirus in Australia.

“But we cannot let it spread as easily as we are at the moment because we no longer have a clear picture of what is going on.”Chair of biostatistics and epidemiology at University of South Australia Adrian Esterman said Victoria’s testing crisis, which led toon Tuesday, was making it impossible to understand the extent of the spread of the virus.

“There’ll be a lot of young people who are annoyed, but we are in the middle of a major outbreak and that needs to be controlled,” he said. “That’s more important than people dancing.”
