Northern California's wine country was on fire again on Monday as strong winds fanned flames in the already badly scorched region, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes in the dark of night.
The latest inferno began with the Glass Fire at 3.50am on Sunday and two subsequent fires merged with it, burning 44 square kilometres as of early Monday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.Credit:Officials did not have an estimate of people under evacuation but Paul Lowenthal, Cal Fire spokesman, said more than 13,000 homes were threatened in Santa Rosa alone. He estimates tens of thousands of people are under evacuation warnings or orders.
Numerous studies in recent years have linked bigger wildfires in America to global warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas, especially because climate change has made California much drier. A drier California means plants are more flammable.Evacuations were also ordered in Shasta County as the Zogg Fire spread over 59 square kilometres.
