A new maths course is helping students who are at risk of leaving school without the numeracy skills they need for everyday life
At Merrylands High, the popularity of maths has surged among the least likely students – the ones who have spent most of their school career avoiding it.
It is also designed to help students pass the minimum numeracy standard, which they will have to reach in order to receive their HSC qualification from next year. "There's a lot of real-life learning. They can see the value in it, they see the mathematics in real life as opposed to on a textbook page. They are able to see how it relates to them and their lives outside school."
