New Zealand recorded another 35 local COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the latest outbreak to 107.
The health department announced the figures with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern scheduled to speak later today about any decision to extend the lockdown.
Genomic sequencing investigations point to a Kiwi who arrived from NSW on a"red zone" flight on August 7 as the index case. The working theory is that the man passed on the deadly virus to at least one of three passers by as he checked into his quarantine hotel, the Crowne Plaza in central Auckland. Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall, herself an infectious diseases physician, conceded the virus could have been passed through the limited barrier.
