Residents of three counties say a six-month trial of armed response teams on patrol has not made them feel safer, and the teams will not become part of New Zealand's policing model.
"Everything we do, we do to keep New Zealanders safe and feeling safe," Commissioner Coster said.
Mr Coster said that he was committed to New Zealand Police remaining a generally unarmed police service. The specially outfitted police vehicle that has been used by ARTs in the trials. Advocacy group Arms Down NZ, which ran a campaign against the trials, issued a statement on twitter welcoming the decision."This is a huge step toward preventing further harm, but we're committed to pushing for an Aotearoa free of police and the violence they cause."
