The government – which announced a $NZ13.4 billion budget deficit in May – expects to raise up to an extra $NZ173 million each year.

Tourists to New Zealand will be slugged a $NZ100 fee to visit, in a move industry groups say cements the nation “as one of the most expensive countries in the world for a holiday”.

The move follows recent shifts to promote New Zealand as a destination for bigger-spending tourists rather than backpackers or the locally loathed “freedom campers”.Freedom campers are low-cost travellers who see the country in self-contained vans, derided by tourism bosses for adding little to the economy but adding to pressures around attractions.A price hike has been foreshadowed for months, and was modelled in the government’s budget to increase from $NZ35 to $NZ70.

“New Zealand’s tourism recovery is falling behind the rest of the world, and this will further dent our global competitiveness,” said Rebecca Ingram, the association’s chief executive.
