Dariq Whitehead, the Newark native and Duke commit, has been named the Naismith Boys' High School Player of the Year.

“Being with him for four years, Montverde’s pretty much a college, a college preparatory school,” Whitehead said last year on ESPN. “Everything he does is getting you ready for the next level, so I appreciate everything he’s done for me. He taught me the game of basketball. He taught me the ins and outs and everything that comes with basketball.”Because of his experience at Montverde, he thinks he will be ready for the transition to college.
During his five years at Montverde, Whitehead has played with R.J. Barrett, the former No. 3 pick in the NBA Draft now with the“Learning from R.J. Barrett, Cade Cunningham and Scottie Barnes, just seeing how they handled the team, that’s something I bring with me to this year ... to the young guys,” he said earlier this season on ESPN. “Make sure the legacy of Montverde continues.”
