The Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed the Hunter region will stay in lockdown for another week, as 24 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in the Newcastle region.Around half of today's new cases are from an aged care homeHalf of the new positive cases come from the RFBI Hawkins Masonic Retirement Village Aged care facility at Edgeworth.All those residents are being taken care of at John Hunter Hospital, and three are receiving oxygen.
Ms Berejiklian says case numbers in the Newcastle area are too high to consider relaxing restrictions.The extended lockdown applies to eight local government areas in the Hunter and parts of the Upper Hunter.They include Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens, Singleton, Dungog, Muswellbrook and Cessnock.
Hunter New England Health says all the new transmissions have been linked to known outbreaks, but six COVID-positive people were infectious in the community.A positive COVID case has visited Newcastle's mass vaccination hub, but health authorities are advising locals the site has been deep cleaned and will continue to operate.The Belmont site was visited by a person on Thursday August 5, between 11am and 11:45am, who later tested positive.
