News Corp Australia has kicked off a $20 million cost-cutting drive by putting the squeeze on expenses.
Finance chief Michael Murphy emailed staff on Tuesday to remind them of the fun new “refreshed” expenses policy. “Since COVID, we have seen a steady increase in discretionary expenses,” he wrote. Hence the need for “appropriate and sometimes difficult choices”.times must be getting tougherTravel? Only fixed-class economy booked 14 days in advance . Murphy himself must sign off on any international trips.
Life’s getting harder for the marketing and sponsorship floors too. Corporate gifts have been rendered almost symbolic at a mere $125 per person. And there’s a $100 limit on gifts “life events” such as weddings, babies or bereavement.Perhaps the most contentious decision is the 57 per cent cut in how much staff can claim back on their monthly phone bill. That’s been hacked down to a mere $21.50, on which journos will be expected to file stories, audio, photos and footage .
$21.50 is no random number. It’s believed to be a helpful nudge to get more people to sign up for a company-issued sim card, which News Corp negotiated with a new provider not too long ago. The cost of the sim? Precisely $21.50.
