Australian high jump stars Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson will share their Olympic podium moment together after winning silver and bronze respectively in Paris. Patterson claimed bronze alongside Ukraine’s Yrna Gerashchenko after both topped out at season-bests 1.95m, the starting height for the final.
But neither could pass 2.02m, with Olyslagers’ missed third jump there handing the victory to Mahuchikh. “So proud of the girls, two Australians, two Ukrainians. It’s really special,” Olyslagers’ coach Matthew Horsnell told Nine. Mahuchikh, who won bronze in Tokyo and is now the unquestioned superstar of high jump as a 22-year-old gold medallist, passed on her third attempt at 2.02m for a shot at 2.04m, hitting the bar to bring an end to the final.
