The Fair Day at Canberra pride festival SpringOut will no longer have a police presence after some members of the LGBTQIA+ community raised concerns.
The No Cops at SpringOUT group said the presence of police at the LGBTQIA+ event would make some vulnerable community members feel unsafe. Canberra 's pride festival SpringOUT won't have a police presence at its Fair Day, in another blow to relationships between law enforcement agencies and the queer community.
The Secretary of SpringOUT Festival Committee Nathan Lester said he hopes the decision will show that the festival has listened to community concerns. "That's when the discussions had commenced but hadn't progressed too far in that space before the community raised some queries around having police presence at Fair Day, which we listened to," Mr Lester said.
ACT police say the role of the LGBTQIA+ liaison officer is to support LGBTQIA+ AFP members and provide a link between the LGBTQIA+ community and police.Zev Aviv, founder of No Cops at SpringOUT, believes the presence of police at the LGBTQIA+ event would make some vulnerable community members feel unsafe.
"I think there are many organisations and parts of our community the police would reach out to start making connections, if that's what they want to do.
