Melanie Smith and her husband decided to bring only one child into the world. The reason is purely financial.
A family member loaned the couple $100,000 for a deposit to buy their first home three years ago. It helped them secure a three-bedroom townhouse in Sydney’s suburban Ingleburn. The couple have since upgraded their home, improving the garden and adding air conditioning and heating. They hope to sell for a profit and move into a larger home in a couple of years.
“We’ve always preferred to enjoy life and not get too stressed out about money, taking a pretty laid-back approach,” she says.
