A child psychologist says the tragic deaths of five primary school children in Tasmania's north-west at an end-of-year celebration will be hard for both children and adults to process and urges those impacted not to put a timeline on their healing.

"I don't think you can put a timeline on [processing trauma] and put a timeline on grief," she said.

"Any behavioural changes, things that are out of character or out of the blue [are signs] … sleep disturbances are not uncommon for children experiencing trauma, [as are] a lack of appetite, irritability, even a change in play or preferences for play, and clinginess," she said. "At some point, you need to stop and allow children time to process and distract themselves into something else."A psychologist who works in north-west Tasmania has told the ABC they are concerned about the region's shortage of psychologists and services in the wake of the incident.

"I've had a conversation with the Prime Minister this morning and we'll reach out to other jurisdictions if they're required," Mr Gutwein said.
