The impending privatisation of franchises in The Hundred has potentially major ramifications for global cricket. But Cricket Australia is not budging on its stance.
A Chelsea director, Indian billionaires and the Glazer siblings have declared their interest in investing in The Hundred, which is England’s premier short-form cricket tournament. The dollars on offer are set to make England the latest destination on the franchise gravy train for the world’s best cricketers. The England board is moving to privatise the franchises in their new white-ball tournament The Hundred, not to be confused with their domestic Twenty20 event, the Vitality Blast T20.
Like the Big Bash League, The Hundred was introduced to grow the sport beyond its traditional audience. So far, more than two million tickets have been sold across the event’s four years, including one million for the women’s games. Privatisation was on the agenda before the revamping of the BBL from a state-based competition to its current form. In 2010, the CA board voted to allow partial ownership of up to 33 per cent of a team.More recently, in 2022, there was lobbying from figures in NSW to sell shares to investors. As it stands, CA is more focused on expansion than privatisation.
“Direct comparisons with other competitions around the world, operating in different national contexts, don’t always reflect our situation in Australia.”What does it mean for the Big Bash? The length of the BBL, 44 matches in 44 days, spanning across Christmas and New Year has also been a hindrance for a league that is now competing against shorter events in South Africa and the UAE.
The Chelsea director Jonathan Goldstein and the Glazer siblings are also among potential investors, according to the LondonProminent Australian player agent Ben Tippett believes cricketers can earn NBA-like salaries if English administrators get it right with The Hundred. The average wage for a player in the NBA, which has a revenue share of about 50 per cent, roughly double that of Australian cricket, is currently $18 million, according to Basketball Reference.
