Dangerous winds and powerful waves are set to batter much of the Queensland coast today as Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle continues to intensify over the Coral Sea.

BOM senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said "exposed eastern coastal areas" are likely to see large waves and strong winds over the coming days. "This is likely to persist for the rest of Friday and … the hazardous surf conditions will likely stick around for the weekend."Norfolk Island has declared a cyclone watch, with Gabrielle expected to move close to or over the island on Saturday or early Sunday morning, potentially as a category two system.
