Parents are driving hundreds of kilometres each week to take their children to play sport because of a lack of facilities across Sydney’s north shore and northern beaches.
“We’ve tried very hard to get sites, but we get beaten by dog walkers and local residents,” she said. Netballers are also grappling with a “serious undersupply” of both indoor and outdoor netball courts. A 2017 report commissioned by the Northern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils found the north shore needed an additional 62 hectares of playing space - equivalent to 78 rectangular fields - by 2026 for sports such as soccer, football, cricket and hockey. The fierce competition for sporting fields comes as Lane Cove and Ku-ring-gai councils sell off open space to developers.Ku-ring-gai rezoned two bowling club sites at Gordon and East Roseville to enable housing to be built, while Lane Cove has granted aBrown said it was “beyond comprehension” that Ku-ring-gai council would sell off the bowling club sites rather than convert them into multipurpose sporting fields.
