Golf: Rory McIlroy is hopeful Donald Trump can help reunify the sport of golf, following his reelection as President of the United States.

McIlroy hopeful Trump can reunite golf | 01:00Nearly a century of tradition is set to be flushed down the toilet with the US Ryder Cup team to be paid for the first time ever at next year’s tournament at Bethpage Black in New York .

American Patrick Cantlay infamously was accused of waging a protest - which he denied - against not being paid by choosing not to wear a team hat and the eight-time PGA Tour winner was tormented by the European fans as a result. “They can do whatever they want,” one Europe player told the UK Telegraph. “But we don’t want payments in our bank accounts, as it’ll be the thin end of the wedge and is not what the Ryder Cup is about.

The organisation - which boasts more than 30,000 club professionals among its members - has not kept all the money for themselves however. The European viewpoint is the polar opposite, and the payment fiasco has the power to turn fans against the Americans.
