It comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Thursday a significant funding boost to the Australian Defence Force, by $38 billion, to expand the force. Mr Morrison’s announcement was made on the same day Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese was scheduled to address the Lowy Institute on national security.

“The Prime Minister employed an old election tactic … by scheduling his own policy announcements, based on the scheduling of his opponent’s similar policy announcements,” Mr Smith said. “The PM, in Brisbane for the floods, got the jump on Albo and got in four hours earlier, to announce a major call to arms, leading up to the year 2040.
