Cleary’s mammoth call; Broncos’ premiership credentials questioned: Talking Points
It was arguably the feel good story of the round. After 405 days, Ryan Papenhuyzen made his return from a serious knee injury in his side’s win over the Titans.
“Sitting on the bench is different. I haven’t done that since the start of my career but I’ll do whatever I can for this team,” Papenhuyzen said. “Obviously it’s going to be a little bit hard for him in the middle but he can play that utility role. At the moment Means is going really well. Bellamy said in his post-match press conference that there was no real plan heading into the Titans match, but was happy with what he saw and hinted at what positions we could see Papenhuyzen play in the coming weeks.
“You could probably play him in the halves as well, but we’ve got some guys we aren’t going to change if they are fit. Hughes, Munster, Nick has done a great job. He slotted seamlessly straight back into the halves alongside Luke Keary as the two steered the Roosters across the park. “We probably didn’t have the platform as much as we wanted today, but then they were still able to find opportunities through some good combinations and good footy.”“I loved having him out there,” Keary said.
The pair combined for four tries, three try assists, five linebreaks and 14 tackle breaks between them across the 80 minutes. That would see Brisbane lock in first place, and otherwise Walters’ side will have to beat the Storm in a huge test ahead of the finals. The 20-year-old speedster was reportedly one of Rugby Australia’s top targets after securing the signature of Joseph Suaalii.Following injuries to Tom Trbojevic and most recently Reueben Garrick, the Tongan international was thrust in to the fullback role against the Bulldogs.
“If he keeps playing like that he won’t be third choice, you need to have depth if you want to go well in the premiership,” Roach said.“This man, didn’t only just fill the void, he was outstanding,” Braith Anasta said. His absence could see Koula get more opportunities at the back and continue to light up opposition defences.O’BRIEN CREDITS KNIGHTS’ DEPTH AS PONGA REPLACEMENT FLAGGED
“That’s what a club is, we want to make sure we are bringing guys into the team,” coach Adam O’Brien said in his post-match press conference.
