NRL signs “largest cryptocurrency sponsorship in Australian sport” in move the anti-gambling lobby labels dangerous.
Rugby league has cashed in on the cryptocurrency boom by signing the “largest digital currency exchange sponsorship in Australian sport”.
“We’ve seen sport captured by the gambling industries and we’ve now seen sport captured by crypto,” he said. “Sport’s integrity can be corrupted and players with crypto accounts can’t exactly be traced like orthodox banking. People get addicted to watch it going up and down without creating anything we think is substantial or an asset.
Swyftx, the brainchild of two 27-year-olds who work out of an office overlooking Suncorp Stadium, is one of the fastest-growing cryptocurrency providers. The company has increased its user numbers from 46,000 to more than half a million in a little over a year. According to sources familiar with the deal, the Australian Rugby League Commission was approached about a partnership with a cryptocurrency firm at the same time as the AFL, and undertook weeks of due diligence on whether to enter into an agreement with the ASIC-registered Swyftx.
