NRL round one live blog: Parramatta and Canterbury renew old rivalry, Gold Coast and St George Illawarra launch new eraBoth the Titans and Dragons will be looking to start life under their new coaches on the best note possible as Des Hasler and Shane Flanagan respectively take charge of their new clubs for the first time.
Earlier, a dazzling performance from a reborn Bryce Cartwright helped Parramatta grind their way to a 26-8 win over Canterbury.The Dragons very nearly score again after Lomax latches onto a bomb and throws it back inside but Faitala-Mariner's offload is picked up by Sami and he flies downfield to flip field position. Randall tries to duck over from close range but is held up and Boyd gets a kick into the in-goal but Sloan scoops it up and fights his way back into the field of play. Good passage of play from both sides.What a start! Dragons get a penalty in their first set and waste no time doing something with it, Flanagan and Hunt combine, Hunt goes short to Faitala-Mariner and he pops an offload to Sloan who pours onto it to score. Excellent way to get us started. Lomax converts and it'sThat'll do us. Spirited work from Canterbury but Parramatta were a cut above. Titans-Dragons will kick off in about 15 minutes.Canterbury spread it right and there's a little bit of something happening, but Wilson drops it as he cuts back inside. Harper picks it up and takes off, he draws the cover and finds Simonsson, who races away to score and put this one beyond all doubt. Gutherson converts and it'sAnother Eels error, Hopgood this time, and Canterbury have a fresh set 30 metres out. On the last tackle they have another nice backline move, this time it's right to left and Hutchinson hits Kikau short and the big man throws a great offload to Crichton who scores on his Canterbury debut! If they can get those two linking up more regularly that could be a handy thing. Burton needs to kick this.....and he doesn't, it fades across the face of goal.I'll say this for Canterbury, they've kept at it. A Penisini error gives Canterbiry field position and the Bulldogs execute a nice left to right shift with Hutchinson and Taaffe combining for Wilson to go over in the corner. Good reward for effort. Burton misses from touch andKikau takes out Brown's legs as he puts a kick in and the big Fijian is in a world of hurt. He's down injured and on report, the legit definition of adding insult to injury. Eels on the attack.Paulo hits Matterson short, he pokes his nose through and throws a great backhand offload to Cartwright and he rolls over for his second try of the day. Gutherson converts and it'sParra go blind on the last and Simonsson runs out of room so he puts a grubber in. It looks dead for all money, but he taps it back into the in-goal. Hughes is there for Canterbury, he rumbles 20 metres upfield only for Cartwright to strip it. He offloads and hits Moses, who goes wide to Penisini and he finds Russell who scores in the corner. A truly insane try and Cartwright continues his great afternoon......but wait, it's going upstairs. Turns out Mann had a foot on the deadball line and the ball just feathered his shoulder before Simonsson tapped it back. I am exhausted. Dogs drop out.Canterbury put up a kick, Kiraz knocks it back and as Taulagi dives onto the loose ball Kikau tries to kick it backwards. He hits the Parramatta player in the ribs and it's a penalty. Two tackles later there's another penalty, this time for slowing down the play the ball, and the Eels are on the attack.Addo-Carr is off and his arm is in a sling. Kiraz has moved to the wing and he gets found out straight away as Lussick hits a 40/20.Parra had the Dogs in the chokehold for that half - dominated field position, completed every set, offloaded at will, they're right on top. Canterbury have defended pretty well considering how under the pump they've been, but they have to get some points on the board quickly or it could get ugly quickly.Lussick goes short to Cartwright and he strolls over untouched, it's a blown read by Salmon. A powerful run from Paulo helped set it up. Gutherson converts and it'sAddo-Carr is really struggling with a shoulder injury, he's battling on but is very hampered. He's just been slammed into the turf by Russell and he's staying down. Moses is doing it tough with a groin issue, he's given up goalkicking and general play kicking but is playing on.The Bulldogs ruin a good defensive set when Hughes grabs Matterson's leg to give away a penalty on the fourth tackle. Gutherson almost gets over from dummy half but not much else happens on the set and Crichton makes a great read to shut down Penisni on the last.A high tackle from Salmon right in front of the posts and the Eels take the easy two. Moses is troubled by a groin injury so Gutherson takes over and he makes no mistake.
