The National Rugby League (NRL) will delay further discussions on expanding to Western Australia until after the state election in March. The NRL will re-engage with the Western Australia n government on expansion talks after the state election in March. While the league has confirmed Papua New Guinea 's entry for 2028 and left the door open for another team in 2027, the Western Bears bid has been stalled since the NRL rejected the initial proposal. Andrew Abdo , NRL CEO, remains confident about expanding to 20 teams.
He stated that talks with the WA government have been productive, with a proposed $120 million backing for the Perth project, including stadium and grassroots support. However, any further discussions will be postponed until after the election, which is expected to see the Labor Party retain power. Abdo emphasized that the decision-making process will be meticulous and take into account the long-term implications. He acknowledged the growing momentum for expansion, driven by the sport's popularity and the potential for fostering more talent. The NRL had initially aimed to finalize a master plan for a 20-team competition by 2032, but the progress has been slower than anticipated. Adding three new teams could allow for a revised season structure, potentially incorporating conferences and reducing the number of rounds.Abdo's comments come as a Mana Pasifika bid, representing Pacific Island nations, has emerged as a contender for the 20th team spot. The NRL CEO indicated that no options are off the table for either team 19 or team 20, particularly with the aim of enhancing rugby league's presence in the Pacific. The league's expansion plans are closely tied to its vision of promoting growth and unity across the region
