Hunt is halfway through chemotherapy for cholangiocarcinoma, or bile duct cancer, a rare illness featuring little to no symptoms.“I think nothing comes from negative thoughts, I just have to stay positive,” Hunt told 7NEWS Brisbane’s Katie Brown, as you canHunt was first concerned about her health in December, but trusted the doctors who checked over her at the time.Toni Hunt’s NRLW career was put on hold just six days after her debut.
“So proud, just excited, nervous, everything. It was great, best feeling,” she said of her debut on March 13. The alarm was raised the following weekend when Hunt, in pain at a light training session before what was to be her second game, was checked by a Broncos physio.“I was like ‘don’t do that! What was that?’”“It started in my gall bladder, went through to my liver and one of the lymph nodes,” she explained.“She got the news and said ‘can you just throw a padding over me, don’t let the doctor tell you that I can’t play’,” Broncos NRLW coach Kelvin Wright told 7NEWS.
“It’s hard to see her go through this but no doubt, the positivity and how strong she is, that she’ll get through it.”The Broncos have extended her contract, even knowing she may not be finished with her treatment in time to return to the field. Hunt decided to speak out on her experience - dating back to that first fruitless visit to the hospital - to send a message to others.“If something’s still not right, get checked again.”
