On June 14, 2017, 72 people were killed when aluminium cladding fuelled aThe tragedy sparked worldwide bans on the combustible material and 18 months ago the NSW government launched a project to fix the issue.Under Project Remediate, it offered ten-year, interest-free loans to residential apartment buildings but this puts the onus on owners to foot the expensive bill to replace cladding.
In Victoria, the state government is helping owners pay for remediation and 154 apartment buildings have already had cladding replaced, while another 54 are in the process of having it done so."We're calling on the NSW Government in the budget next week to provide financial support for apartment owners and residents to remove flammable cladding," Housso said.
However the Strata Community Association in NSW argues it's important the replacement is done correctly. "I understand that it's been frustrating for a lot of consumers, however it is a very complicated project," President Stephen Brell said.Fair Trading Minister Eleni Petonis was not available to comment on Project Remediate and NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet batted away questions at a press conference.
