OPINION: The federal Liberals are now in hostile territory in every state in Australia bar Tasmania. The NSW result is another wake-up call for the Liberal Party, but will it heed the message?

everywhere except Tasmania. It’s not only that the most reform-minded state Liberal government has now been rejected by voters more attracted by Labor’s promises of higher wages, lower bills and an end to privatisations.with much of middle Australia, particularly professional women, particularly growing numbers of younger voters, particularly aspirational migrants.in Victoria on Saturday.

Continued inability to do much about the cost-of-living pressures now dominating voter concerns, and certain to get worse, may yet sour community patience with Labor’s promise of “a better future”. The red corflutes popping up in the last days of the campaign calling for a “fair go for renters” were about as detailed as Labor got in how it plans to deal withIronically, the about-to-be ex-NSW premier Dominic Perrottet was better than expected in delivering anfor a long-term Liberal government. Along with his treasurer, Matt Kean, Perrottet focused on selling policies that were socially and environmentally progressive as well as economically innovative.

Such bitter divisions frequently blocked Perrottet’s attempts to ensure preselection for more women, or for community-based candidates with strong local appeal, in an effort to show the Liberals had not lost touch with more modern concerns.Nor could the premier’s repeated exhortations about the importance of economic management overcome regular strikes by teachers, nurses and particularly transport workers demanding higher wages.

But Minns is certainly not about to follow some of Perrottet’s pledged social advances – such as mandating cashless gaming cards to deal with problem gambling or setting up an individual “future fund” for every child to pay for later education or housing.
