The NSW Energy Minister, Penny Sharpe, has faced intense criticism for suggesting Australians reduce their electricity consumption during a severe heatwave, which has led to power outages and blackouts in the state.

NSW Energy Minister Penny Sharpe under fire after suggesting Aussies use less power amid heatwave, blackout woes

Speaking on the tight supply of power, NSW Energy and Environment Minister Penny Sharpe suggested New South Wales households use less power, even suggesting the exact temperature their air conditioning units should be set at. Her comments triggered severe backlash with Sky News host Chris Kenny lashing out over her remarks on Tuesday evening.“You and I might suggest a modern country needs to ensure it’s got enough power when it needs it, but these people want us to stop using electricity.

Adding to the backlash, the director of energy research at the Centre for Independent Studies Aidan Morrison said it was “surprising” to see the minister suggesting Australians limit air-conditioning use during a heat wave. He argued Australians should expect to see more shortages down the track if the government pursued its mamoth green energy transition.

“With temperatures set to soar in NSW, reports that at least one generation unit at three of NSW’s four coal-fired power plants is offline for maintenance or repairs, shows coal-fired power stations are a blackout risk,” Ms Tink said in a statement. “It’s bizarre that some seem to conclude that this is evidence we don’t need them at all and would be better off with a system that had even less reliable energy,” he said.

“Start listening to some of the language that will come out of AEMO and the government, you’ll hear ‘demand management’. What does that mean? It means blackouts.
