Watch this time-lapse and see Sydney disappear under thick smoke. We have the latest on the smoke, the fires and the warnings across the state here:
Speaking at a press conference at Kirribilli House this morning, Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged all residents to "take great care and follow the advice and warnings that have been provided and to stay safe and to exercise appropriate judgement."Credit:The PM offered assurances that "the nationally coordinated effort and the specific state efforts which are leading the response in each of their jurisdictions has been incredibly professionally deployed.
"The ADF continue to support the efforts of our response by the states and territories. Where I was at Wilburforce on the weekend, there were ADF people involved there, involved in everything from the airlifts, surveillance, involved in clearing areas - they are doing their job, the firefighters are doing their job.""I’ve been incredibly impressed by the coordination that has occurred between our states and territories, with great support from those from overseas.
By 9am, PM2.5 fine particle readings had reached "very poor" to "hazardous" levels in parts of Sydney's north-west and south-west. The worst readings, between 200 and 350 on the air quality index, have so far been recorded at Richmond, St Marys, Rouse Hill, Bringelly and Bargo. The smell of smoke is also strong in eastern Sydney, where visibility is at "hazardous" levels on the air quality index and fine particle readings are "poor".
At "poor" levels, NSW Health advises sensitive people to cut back or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities. At "very poor", everone should do that but sensitive people should avoid outdoor activities. At "hazardous" levels, everyone should significantly cut back on outdoor physical activities, while sensitive groups should avoid all outdoor activities.
