NSW government commits to changes to mothballed train fleet if unions halt action | Rabe9
The NSW government has committed to modify a multibillion dollar train fleet at the centre of a long-running union dispute ahead of a pivotal court decision over industrial action impacting Sydney’s rail network.
The intercity fleet was meant to enter service in 2019 but remains in mothballs on the state’s Central Coast because rail workers refuse to staff it due to safety concerns. “Once these preconditions are agreed upon, we will request that the secretary of the Department of Transport enters into a deed,” the letter says.
Both sides made concessions ahead of the Fair Work Commission hearings, with the union on Thursday agreeing to ease action affecting the construction of the Metro rail project. The NSW Rail, Tram and Bus Union also agreed to lift bans on cleaning trains on Wednesdays and Fridays.
