The NSW government will use improved access to childcare as an economic lever by unveiling a $5 billion decade-long funding boost aimed at getting more parents back to work.
The package, which will be announced in next Tuesday’s budget, involves grants to help expand or build new centres in so-called “childcare deserts”, as well as cash incentives for centres that offer more affordable rates for parents facing challenges sending kids to childcare, such as poorer parents, single mothers and regional families.
said his policy, worth $775 million over the next four years and $5 billion over a decade, was “transformational” and would lower the barriers some parents, especially women, faced in returning to work.“We know that childcare places are scarce in some postcodes, making it difficult for parents to return to work when they want,” he said. “Improving access to childcare by investing in supply will provide practical assistance to families.
It will also provide cash incentives to centres and providers in a bid to lower the cost of care for women and families who face the highest disincentives against sending their kids to childcare.
