NSW Health's Dr Jeremy McAnulty has urged the state's residents to be on alert for symptoms of meningococcal after a Sydney man in his 40s died with the disease.
"Meningococcal disease is a rare, but serious and sometimes fatal infection," NSW Health said.
"Up to one in 10 cases die, and four in 10 infections result in permanent disabilities, including learning difficulties, sight and hearing problems, liver and kidney failure, loss of fingers, toes or limbs, or scarring caused by skin grafts.""Under the National Immunisation Program, meningococcal ACWY vaccine is provided free for babies at 12 months, adolescents, and people of all ages with certain medical conditions," the statement said.
