ANALYSIS: Why Barilaro's New York job saga is an own goal for NSW Premier
The NSW Premier's authority has been severely weakened internally, and it's all down to his to judgement around the government's spectacular own goal.
They think he misread the political ramifications of the former deputy premier getting the $500,000-a-year job from the beginning and, as a result, failed to take decisive action earlier. He said it was clear the appointment was not made "at arm's length" from government — something which Mr Ayres had repeatedly claimed — and raised concerns the Penrith MP had breached the ministerial code of conduct.John Barilaro successfully applied for the New York job after leaving politics last year.Part of his motivation appeared to be appeasing the growing, public chorus of concern.
In the interim, the opposition was dogged in uncovering government documents related to the appointment, and an upper house committee has held a parliamentary inquiry that has made plenty of headlines. When Mr Barilaro withdrew from the position in late June, he said the appointment would "continue to be a distraction" unless he stood down.Mr Perrottet's critics within his party believe the danger was clear from the beginning.
Although the New York trade position wasn't required to be approved or even noted by cabinet, privately, ministers have said any discussion in that forum would have been met with an agitated consensus advising against Mr Barilaro's appointment.Dominic Perrottet said there were questions about whether Stuart Ayres breached the ministerial code of conduct.
