Compulsory mask wearing, social distancing and lockdowns might be a thing of the past, but the COVID-19 virus is still very much here in Australia - and rising.

In fact, the number of cases of COVID-19 has been steadily increasing recently, prompting NSW Health to issue a warning today. To combat this new wave of the virus, anyone with cold and flu is being advised to stay at home. But COVID-19 was not done with us yet. On November 26, the World Health Organisation named Omicron as a new variant of concern.

NSW Health stopped reporting weekly COVID-19 case numbers last month on October 20, when Australia's chief medical officer declared the virus was no longer a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance following the end of winter in Australia. The latest figures for the week ending on October 24, however, show there were 936 COVID-19 cases recorded nationally for the seven-day period, an increase of 23.6 percent on the previous week.

In the seven days to October 24, there were 2 COVID-19 related deaths recorded, down from 3 the week before. The latest COVID-19 figures are considered to be a huge underestimate of the real number in the community because of the lack of testing these days and changes to reporting requirements.
