'Everyone in NSW is indebted to our health workers.' 9News

Premier Dominic Perrottet made the announcement this morning as he unveiled a $4.5 billion plan to boost the state's health workforce.

As well as the $3000 one-off payment, health workers - and other public sector workers in the state - will see a wage cap increase in coming years.Perrottet said the wage cap would rise from 2.5 per cent to three per cent this financial year, and to 3.5 per cent the year after. The latter issue will also be addressed in a government plan to increase the workforce by more than 10,000 people.

"Everyone in NSW is indebted to our health workers for their selfless efforts throughout the pandemic, remembering for a long time there was no vaccine and they risked their lives each day to care for patients," Perrottet said. Dr Alex Mackey from Liverpool Hospital in Sydney's south-west said COVID-19 had exposed some cracks in the system.

"The emergency department is overwhelmed, staff are tired, we're in desperate need of some help," he said.
