Mark Speakman is expected to end weeks of speculation and formally announce his candidacy for the NSW Liberal leadership and is widely considered the favourite to beat rival Anthony Roberts.

Mr Speakman, who comes from the dominant moderate faction of the NSW Liberals, has not spoken publicly since the party lost at the last election in March, but is widely considered the frontrunner.

Former NSW attorney-general Mark Speakman is widely expected to run for the leadership of the state Liberal party on Friday. Picture: NCA Newswire/Gaye Gerard He is seen by some as a safe option for a placeholder leader, who can oversee reforms necessary to make the party more attractive in the eyes of voters.

"We need someone to lead the party to iron out our differences. I'm happy to be the person that would deliver a clear way forward." Mr Speakman's position as a moderate puts him in a slightly stronger position to garner cross factional support. The moderates are the largest faction in the NSW Liberals and count powerful members such as former treasurer Matt Kean amongst their numbers.
