NSW Rural Fire Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons has warned the technique was "not the panacea" and said longer fire seasons had created a "shrinking window" in which hazard reduction could safely occur. Dr Zylstra said National Parks' data showed there had been more controlled burns inside park boundaries in the decade to 2018-19 than in any previous decade.
"Why are we getting a record fire season at the peak of a record season of burning - why didn't it happen in other decades when burning was much lower?," Dr Zylstra said. The NSW Coalition has previously split over the Nationals-backed proposal to allow cattle to graze in national parks to reduce fuel loads. Both Mr Barilaro and NSW Agricultural Minister Adam Marshall have publicly endorsed the measure, butDr Zylstra said many studies had examined the impact of grazing in the high country and had "refuted the claim that grazing reduces blazing".
