One leading virus expert is at a loss to understand how NSW has approached the explosion in new Covid cases this week.

epidemiologist and health researcher Professor Nancy Baxter said she was at a loss to understand why NSW went ahead with the relaxation of mask wearing in the face of a new Covid wave.“I don’t know anywhere else in the world that has relaxed mask mandates in the face of Omicron. It doesn’t make any sense at all, and most jurisdictions have been increasing mask mandates,” she said.

Professor Baxter encouraged those in NSW to keep wearing masks in indoor settings – echoing a plea from the government’s own Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, this week. Professor Baxter said people in NSW needed to persist with “high quality, well-fitting masks.” Picture: Getty
