A NSW parliamentary inquiry will investigate the reasons behind the state's teacher shortage, weeks after public and private teachers went on strike.

Teachers march to state parliament during a strike by NSW public school and Catholic school teachers in Sydney, on Thursday, 30 June 2022.The brain drain of NSW teachers leaving the profession or not being attracted to the job in the first place is the focus of a new parliamentary inquiry.

The teachers' unions want a pay rise of five to seven per cent, but the NSW government is offering three per cent.NSW Teachers Federation president Angelo Gavrielatos and NSW Independent Education Union of Australia secretary Mark Northam will appear before the inquiry on Thursday. Apart from better pay, teachers say the chronic staff shortage is due to a lack of career and financial incentives, leading to unmanageable workloads.
