The Hat Head fire – about 15 kilometres east of Kempsey – began on October 17 and has since burnt through nearly 3000 hectares of national park bushland.
Two fires at nearby Crescent Head also began on the same day.Police have now launched an investigation into the Hat Head fire, believing it was suspiciously lit, as well as whether it had any links to the two Crescent Head fires.
Sydney is set to reach a maximum 28 degrees on Tuesday, while Penrith in the city’s west is forecast to soar to 36 degrees.Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Angus Hines said there was a “broad area” of fire danger across the state on Wednesday, particularly in northern NSW.He said Grafton was expected to hit 40 degrees on Wednesday, while Sydney will reach 25 and Penrith will reach 31.
