Researchers say an asteroid impact crater up to 520 kilometres in diameter could lie under a the town of Deniliquin in southern New South Wales.
An impact crater thought to be almost three times larger than the one left by the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs may have been discovered in southern New South Wales.The crater is thought to be roughly 520 kilometres in diameterThe potential crater is centred near the town of Deniliquin and is buried under millions of years of sediment.
Lead author and University of New South Wales adjunct professor Andrew Glikson said an asteroid responsible for the phenomenon could have hit Earth roughly 420 million years ago."If it's true, it's the largest impact structure not just in Australia but anywhere." He said the phenomenon could have been caused by the collision of two landmasses instead, similar to a mountain range."The other possibility is that it's a big, curved structure how Switzerland looks like a big croissant as Italy crashes into the middle of Europe and it makes that big, curved structure.
"That can cause vapours and solutions down in the deeper crust and the mantle to come closer to the surface and precipitate out and you could have mineral deposits associated with it too."Professor Moresi said it would be impossible for geologists to know for certain until samples could be drilled from the core."We're trying to work through this detective story to work out what happened in this place hundreds of millions of years ago, that's quite difficult," he said.
