NSW Premier Chris Minns has told an inquiry the night-time economy would benefit from alcohol restrictions being eased, however, the substance should stay out of parliament.
A NSW parliamentary inquiry is considering a bill to remove restrictions on alcohol consumption in public places. However, the premier said he would like to see alcohol banned in parliament.
The premier said, in general, he believed there were too many restrictions regarding the sale of alcohol."There's too many places around Sydney, not just in a CBD, that close pretty close to 8:30pm and there's a lot of people that want to go out and spend money and drive the economy," Mr Minns said."Parliament," he said.A workplace where drinking is normal
The premier gave up drinking before the election. He has previously described the decision as "life-changing". Libertarian Party MP John Ruddick, who introduced the private member's bill, said it would grant individuals the right to consume alcohol responsibly in designated public areas while upholding penalties for dangerous drinking behaviour.
"Allowing public consumption may have the effect of removing the ability to manage intoxication by limiting the supply of alcohol, while heightening the risk of an individual being intoxicated in public," manager of policy and engagement at the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Robert Taylor, argued. "It has a disproportionate impact on Aboriginal people, young people and people experiencing homelessness," she said.
