Breaking: Deputy Premier Paul Toole says the flood situation is 'escalating' for Sydney, telling anyone in the north-west who was affected by floods in March 2021 to 'leave your home now'. Follow our live coverage:

Residents near the Hawkesbury River in north-west Sydney face an anxious wait as water levels continue to rise, less than a year after vast stretches of land were inundated during floods last March.

Among the onlookers gathered at the river was Windsor resident Glenn Ford, 59, who placed a rock at the edge of the river to gauge how quickly the water was rising. As the water lapped at the bottom of the stone, he estimated the river was swelling "about 100mm every 30 minutes".Mr Ford admitted to feeling "a little bit anxious". He moved to the centre of town after his two-storey home beside the river at Wilberforce was destroyed in last year's floods.

Mr Moise, whose house is two metres above last year's flood level, said people in flood-prone areas were playing "watch and see". A band of “really intense, torrential rainfall” – or in recent parlance, perhaps, “rain bomb” – is due to arrive before dawn tomorrow, somewhere between Wollongong and Newcastle.

It comes as large rainfall totals continue to accumulate along the coast. At Macquarie Pass, a section of the Illawarra Highway close to a number of waterfalls, 282 millimetres fell from 9am Tuesday to 5pm today. The highway has been closed in both directions due to flooding since early this morning. Residents in North Richmond near the Redbank Dam should evacuate immediately because "there is a likely chance that the Redbank dam will fail and cause flooding to the properties below the dam", he said.Watch: NSW SES press conferenceFour charged over south-east Queensland flood lootingQueensland police have charged four more people over alleged looting incidents at flood-impacted properties around the state’s saturated south-east corner.

The three people were charged with stealing by looting in a natural disaster, along with drug and explosives possession charges and are expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on May 18.A 30-year-old man from Rocklea, in Brisbane’s south, was charged with stealing by looting over the first incident and will appear in the same court on March 31.

While there are no current evacuation orders in place for Sydney and surrounds, that may change quickly and people are urged to check the SES social channels regularly. Residents along the state’s coast are asked to only make essential trips, and if they must leave home, consider the following three things:If the route is free and you’re on your essential trip and you come across floodwater, stop and turn aroundNorth Richmond bridge likely to close as Chipping Norton given evacuation warning
