New South Wales has recorded 44 new coronavirus cases - the highest number of local infections in the state in 14 months - as a major police operation kicks off in Sydney's south-west.

On Thursday NSW Police revealed they would ramp up patrols on the streets of south-west Sydney to enforce stay-at-home orders following a rise in community transmission in the area.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke said"compliance is about us getting ahead of the virus". Overnight, contact tracers identified more than two dozen new COVID hotspots in Sydney’s inner-west, south-west and west, including a Kathmandu shop, an Aldi and a Kmart.Anyone who attended the following venues at the times listed is a close contact and must immediately get tested and isolate for 14 days, regardless of the result:Burwood – Mehfil North Indian Cuisine, Westfield Burwood Shopping Centre, 100 Burwood Road: Sunday July 4, 1.05pm to 1.
