NSW has 458 patients in hospital with COVID-19 and 52 in intensive care as the state recorded 6394 new cases. It follows a rush by the federal government to get an extra 800,000 COVID-19 booster jabs to GPs and pharmacists in the first week of January.

More than 6000 cases were reported in NSW on Christmas Day, with pharmacists saying they have been swapping doses between chemists after being swamped with people trying to book booster jabs. The interval will further be cut to three months on January 31, based on the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation’s advice.NSW hit a vaccine milestone on Christmas Day, with 95 per cent of people over 16 having had one COVID-19 dose.
