Energy experts say authorities in New South Wales will be on alert this summer for energy shortages with planned and unplanned outages at coal-fired power stations removing important supply from the grid at times of peak demand.

New South Wales has experienced its first burst of heat this summer season and with it the risk of large-scale power outages to put pressure on the state's energy grid.

"This situation is a result of heatwave conditions combined with the unavailability of major power stations," AEMO said in a statement. Bayswater Power Station had one planned and unplanned outage, while Vales Point Station had one unplanned outage and Eraring Power Station had one planned outage. Mr Merzian said renewable energy projects were not coming online fast enough to keep up with demand in NSW.ABC News: Mary Lloyd"New South Wales is being challenged right now but this is not something exceptional. We knew this was coming," Mr Merzian said.
