The North Black Range fire was downgraded to watch and act overnight, but officials warn residents in Braidwood and nearby areas that if their plan is to leave, they should do so now.

Firefighters are still working to control the North Black Range blaze that broke from the Tallaganda National Park and jumped the Shoalhaven River towards Braidwood in southern New South Wales. The Rural Fire Service has warned Braidwood residents to leave now if it is their fire plan to do soThe fire was downgraded from an emergency to watch and act overnight, but officials have warned residents in Braidwood and the surrounding area that if their fire plan is to leave, they should do so now.

Last night the bushfire grew to 19,000 hectares in size and came within a kilometre of Braidwood, a town of 1,600 people. There have been no reports of lost homes, but Rural Fire Service district officer Darren Marks said some damage was expected. "You can fairly safely assume that there has been a significant amount of fire that has gone through Little Bombay and Bombay," Mr Marks told ABC Radio Canberra on Friday. The RFS has called in an air tanker and established containment lines outside Braidwood to prevent the fire encroaching upon the town.

The Kings Highway has been closed between Mayfield Road and Batemans Bay in both directions, though the RFS is working to reopen it. Mr Marks said the fire — believed to have started with a lightning strike on Tuesday — was too dangerous to try to bring under control.
