Origin Energy has allocated $240 million in remediation costs for the Eraring coal-fired power station, but the NSW government may also have to pay some compensation.

Under a complex deal struck when the NSW government sold the Eraring, Bayswater, Liddell and Vales Point power stations in 2012 and 2013, the state was deemed to be responsible for the cost of cleaning up contamination caused in the decades it owned the relevant power station, while the new owner was responsible for anything after they took control.Each power station had its own arrangements for the decommissioning costs including Eraring, which was bought by Origin Energy in 2013.
